Why Marriage Visa (Non-Immigrant O) in Thailand?

The Marriage Visa (Non-Immigrant O) is granted by the Thai government to support and protect the rights of legally married couples, where one partner is a Thai citizen and the other is a foreign national. So that they can live together in Thailand with legal status, family stability, and immigration protection.

📆 Types & Duration:

1. Initial Non-Immigrant O Visa (90 Days)

  • Applied outside Thailand at a Thai embassy/consulate

  • Gives you an initial 90-day stay

  • Can be extended into a 1-year Marriage Visa once in Thailand

2. 1-Year Marriage Visa Extension

  • Applied inside Thailand at the Immigration Office

  • Renewable annually

  • You don’t have to leave the country if you renew on time

💰 Financial Requirements:

To qualify for the 1-year extension, you must meet one of the following:

  1. 400,000 THB deposited in a Thai bank account

    • Must be in your name

    • Money must be in the account for 2 full months before applying (OR)

  1. 40,000 THB monthly income

    • Must be verifiable (salary slip, bank transfer, pension, etc.)

    • An affidavit from your embassy may be required

📝 Required Documents:

For the Initial Visa:

  • Passport (6+ months validity)

  • Visa application form

  • Marriage certificate (Thai and translated copy)

  • ID card and house registration (Tabien Baan) of Thai spouse

  • Photos of you and your spouse together

  • Financial documents (if applicable)

For the 1-Year Extension:

  • All of the above, plus:

    • Proof of financials (bank book & bank letter, OR income documents)

    • Photos of your home life (you and spouse together, inside/outside home)

    • House map

    • Interview with both spouses at Immigration (sometimes done during a home visit)

📌 Important Notes:

  • 90-day reporting is required, even with the 1-year visa (report your address every 90 days)

  • You cannot work with this visa (you’d need a work permit for employment)

  • Visa is renewable annually if you maintain requirements

  • You can convert from another visa (like a Tourist Visa) to a Marriage Visa while in Thailand

Benefits:

  • Stay with your Thai spouse long-term

  • No need to leave Thailand to renew

  • Lower financial requirements than a retirement visa

  • Option to apply for Permanent Residency after 3 years on this visa (with marriage)

❌ Challenges:

  • Requires regular paperwork and check-ins

  • Immigration interviews and home photos can feel intrusive

  • Financial proof must be kept updated
